An iconic 100% old-vine Malbec from the 80-year old Rosas Vineyard in the Uco Valle
Deep, dark color—you could use it in an inkwell! Dense and concentrated but never loses its ability to exude the red and black fruits and spice that are the true expression of Malbec in Mendoza. This is a huge wine that is a blend of old-vine grapes from 2 of Mendoza’s most respected growers, located in two different districts. Only 4 barrels produced. While you certainly could drink this now, it will improve considerably with 3-5 years in the bottle. If you do drink it now, decant a few hours before drinking.
Try with meats such as beef, pork or chicken. Pairs well with aged cheeses.
A saturated blackish purple color and reduced aromas of black olive, road tar and ultimately savory black fruits open this power-packed Malbec. A deeply fruity palate is braced by rugged tannins, while this tastes decidedly toasty and dark, with crusty black-fruit flavors touched up by herbs and oak. Toastiness and coffee notes remain up front on a sizable finish; drink through 2032.Wine Enthusiast October 2020
Saturated ruby. Very dark, brooding scents of crushed black fruits, licorice pastille, violet and shoe polish, plus a hint of herbs. Then rich, deep and chocolatey on the palate, with its intense black fruit flavors benefitting from the inner-mouth floral lift of this vintage in Uco Valley. The wine's subtle sweetness is perfectly balanced by harmonious acidity. Finishes with a fine dusting of tannins and palate-staining persistence. Even today, there's nothing austere about this stunning wine, which should gain in interest for the next decade.Vinous September 2019
The 2016 Nico By Luca Malbec shows unusual finesse and harmony, and time in bottle seems to have polished it to a very drinkable version of this single-vineyard Malbec. There is great integration of the oak, the tannins are fine and feel very resolved, and the wine is approachable but has all the ingredients for a positive development in bottle. The Wine Advocate October 2019
The vineyards are located in Uco Valley: Altamira (Paganotto Vineyard) and La Consulta (Rosas Vineyard). The grapes are hand-harvested and aged for 24 months in 33% new French oak (500 liter barrels) and 67% in 2nd use French oak (500 liter barrels).
