Excerpts from Bon Appetit Magazine (February 2001 issue, pp. 36-38, by Anthony Dias Blue)
THE NEXT BIG THING
Argentine wines--and particularly the Malbecs--are bound for glory... Of course, Argentine winemakers use grapes other than Malbec. Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese and SYrah have lots of potential as well, and growers are even experimenting with Pinot Noir. As far as whites go, Chardonnays from the top wineries can be phenomenal...Now is the time to buy Argentine wine.
While corporate-owned wineries may dominate then market, the most exciting wines in Argentina are boutique labels..The quality of many of these wines [BenMarco, Gusto Vita, Susana Balbo] is world class.
The superb 1999 Tikal Corazon, for example, draws on the Bonarda and Malbec grapes for its deep, luscious fruit, while the stunning 1999 Luca Pinot Noir shows the great promise of this largely untried varietal in Argentina.
In less than 20 years, the Argentine wine industry has been transformed. Sleepy Mendoza has suddenly found itself a destination in the wine world...Now it's simply a matter of time before one (or more) of these exceptional Argentine wineries makes the rest of the world really take notice.
