Nick Ramkowsky is a lifetime wine guy. Nick got his first wine business experience in 1986 working at North Berkeley Wine Shop while still attending UC Berkeley. Nick quickly moved from the sales staff to management, eventually becoming the store’s manager and wine buyer.After working as a sales representative for several Bay Area wine wholesalers, Nick started his own wine sales and distribution company. Nick represented top-quality California wineries, portfolios of some of France’s best wines, and a collection of several high quality wineries from Argentina and Chile. Years later, Nick became one of Ed’s key wine suppliers at Passport Wine Club.
Over time, Ed & Nick became good friends as well as respected business associates. Soon after the sale of Passport Wine Club, Ed joined Nick on a trip to South America that would change their lives. After visiting many wineries and tasting many wines from the just-completed 1999 harvest, Ed & Nick came to the conclusion that they simply had to seize the opportunity to bring their wine discoveries to the U.S. by forming a wine importing and national sales & marketing company, Vine Connections.
Vine Connections’ Argentine wines (BenMarco, Gusto Vita, Luca, mapema, Susana Balbo, Tikal) have earned high praise from all the major U.S. wine and food publications. Vine Connections continues to pursue other small, exciting wine producers in areas as diverse as New Zealand, Mexico and even Japan (Sake).
